The Kechari Mudra: Untangling the Spiritual Knots 

The granthis are naturally blocked for an important reason. They are there to protect our nervous system from electrical overload or energy shocks.

Ultimately, the last of all these tongue mudras shall be that one where the tongue is allowed to fold and roll upwards to finally enter the backs of the uvula and up to the backs of the nasal cavity. From there, the root of the tongue will seal the point where the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna Nadis cross again. 

Inside, the root of the tongue is gently drawing back to the tops of the neck where it connects to the base of the skull. In here the backs of the jaw are relaxed and held steady. As you gently draw the inhalation up from the base of the hips, you will feel the floor of the mouth suck inwards and up. Together with the most subtle manifestations of all the various locks, this action shall finally direct the kundalini energy to enter the central nervous system. This is so helpful in clearing the pathways of energetic blockages. The Khechari mudra itself does not guarantee the Samadhi. The process of attaining Samadhi is another dimension all together which again, goes way and beyond this point. But the Khechari Mudra is helpful in preparing the body and mind for stillness. 

Khechari means the ‘the force that roams in space’, mudra means seal. Khechari Mudra is one powerful meditation of allowing the subtle Kundalini energy to enter the brain to unite with the prana (soma) which is dwelling inside the brain. The tongue is coiled backwards and effortlessly goes into an opening located above the nasopharynx in the skull. When the student skilfully breathes through the inner body (the bandhas here are relaxed) while at the same time listening to the Anahata Nada, attaining a complete absorption of the mind is easy with Khechari Mudra.

Granthis: Liberating our Spirits

Within the Sushumna Nadi there are three psychic knots of energy, known as granthis. The Sanskrit word granthi means a knot or a tied-up force. These knots prevent human life from developing beyond its instinctive, emotional and intellectual levels. For example, lack of physical activity and unhealthy lifestyle cause the prāṇa to get obstructed and short-circuited in the hips, diminishing the flow of energy to the higher regions of the body. The path of the kuṇḍalinī is obstructed, preventing its upward movement to the higher chakras

When the Kundalini is awakened properly, it could be directed to enter the Sushumna nadi where the chakras of the subtle body exist. She irrigates her pathway as she makes her way up, loosening the knots of ignorance known as the granthis, which in turn, illuminates the soul.

The granthis are naturally blocked for an important reason. They are there to protect our nervous system from electrical overload or energy shocks. Some people are energetically sensitive and could easily be induced to trance. The granthis act like safety valves or circuit breakers, that effectively prevent premature entrance of the kuṇḍalini energy into the chakras above the second centre (svadhisthana chakra). The granthis would have to be opened in order, from the bottom to top. The reason being is that the vital organs of the upper body are more sensitive to electrical current and could suffer if they are put into intense pressure. Also, by allowing the kundalini to pass through the lower knots first, its force gets filtered and the power is greatly decreased.

The three psychic and spiritual granthis are the following:

  1. Brahma granthi. The first knot is located in the hips, between the Muladhara and the Svadisthana chakra. Personally, I could relate it more to the Kanda nadi which is located in the core of the hips. The Kanda nadi is the where the Ida, Pingala and Sushumna nadis all originate from. When this knot opens up, the Kundalini easily enters the mouth of the Sushumna nadi. The two bottom bandhas are greatly developed around this stage. The Brahma Granthi is connected with the physical body and sense ego. It creates instinctive drives and strong, demanding, sensual desires with attachment.
  2. Vishnu granthi. The second knot is located at the heart chakra (anāhata) and is related to both the energetic body and the lower astral system (lower chakras). The inner trunk is vast and empty. It is hollow and so deep inside where only the breath is present. When the Kundalini untangles this knot, it causes the heart to shine through. Meditating upon the Vishnu granthi is the most calming and peaceful experience. It allows all the beauty of the heart to come out. Teaching, service and goodwill all come from here.
  3. Rudra granthi. The third knot is inside the brain which is also referred to as the Spiritual Eye or third eye. Externally, this is the point between the eyebrows. The Rudra Granthi is related to the causal body (Ajna chakra) which is the closest to experiencing the soul. This is the point where the iḍā and piṅgalā nādīs cross over each inside the brain. When the kuṇḍalini loosens this knot, it can continue its upward journey to the crown chakra (sahasrāra), enabling the yogi to attain transcendental bliss. Rudra granthi is concerned with intellectual obsessions, and attachments to psychic phenomena and psychic powers, and our mortal insecurity. By breathing into the Spiritual Eye, we stimulate the inner brain. It increases our focus and brings mental clarity.  The mind unloads its burdens and the healing force which is in the brain (Soma) willingly descends to purify the body and finally rest in the heart. That is why the Rudra and the Vishnu are very much related. 

The coiling of the two snakes as seen in many ancient artefacts such as the one shown here represent the kundalini energy unknotting the three granthis.
