Bhastrika Pranayama and Kapalbhati: In-Depth Comparisson and Recommendations

In my earlier article, I explored Bhastrika Pranayama, giving you a comprehensive introduction and practice guide. Now, let us study another hatha yoga technique—Kapalbhati Shatkarma.

This round, we’ll compare these two dynamic practices, understanding their technical similarities and differences, unique benefits, and how to safely progress with each. Whether you’re seeking to deepen your understanding or enhance your practice, this comparison will give valuable insights into how these breathing practices can support your transition to the higher practices of hatha yoga.

Kapalbhati Shatkarma

Kapalbhati is a dynamic breathing technique with the emphasis on the exhalation phase. The inhalation naturally occurs as a result of the air exiting the nostrils during this practice. Kapalbhati is an effective method for cleansing the nasal cavity. It also stimulates the frontal brain region and generates heat within the nadis, the body’s subtle energy channels. Kapalbhati is recognised as one of the seven Shatkarma, the purification practices of Hatha Yoga.
