The Matsya Kridasana – The Perfect Asana for Back Release and Much More

The Sushumna, Vajra and Bhrama Nadis

Yoga texts, if only to be studied by the books, is far from enough. Before their spiritual essence is fully understood, one has to face them, go through them and rise above the challenges they come with. The process is long, elusive and enduring. But with practice, willpower and guidance, it is meaningful and the most rewarding.

Pranayama is the most helpful in activating the subtle body. If done properly and consistently, pranayama awakens centres in the body and brain, which are generally dormant- therefore releasing their higher potentials. However, this is just a part of the process, balancing the energetic system is the core essence of pranayama.

Our subtle body comprises numerous energy channels called nadis, signifying the flow. Among these, the Ida (left), Pingala (right), and Sushumna (middle) remain most active. Typically, either the Ida or Pingala holds dominance due to the fluctuations in energy flow. Alongside blockages and energy interruptions, one’s dominant nature also influences the energy levels coursing through these nadis.

Ida corresponds to the left nostril and the right hemisphere of the brain, while Pingala is linked to the right nostril and the left hemisphere. The ida nadi is dominant amongst introverted people. Also, Ida governs subconscious actions, lending a spontaneous and organic quality, which can sometimes manifest as impulsiveness. Conversely, Pingala oversees conscious and active functions, characterised by analytical, sequential, and mathematical traits.
